Real silver tarnishes due to a chemical reaction with sulfur-containing compounds in the air, forming silver sulfide. This reaction results in a dull, black or gray film on the silver's surface. 

Tarnish is a natural, chemical process, not a flaw in the silver or its quality. 

To safely clean tarnish from real silver, you can use a simple solution of baking soda and water, create a paste, and apply it to the tarnished areas. Alternatively, you can use a commercial silver cleaner or a gentle polishing cloth. For more stubborn tarnish, a baking soda and aluminum foil method can be effective.
